Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to fabricate shaped assemblies using polymer sheeting, rods or bars.
This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team.
The unit principally refers to a largely manual assembly process for all kinds of rubber and plastic and usually involves the use of jigs and fixtures of special designs.
No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

What You'll Learn

1. Check work requirements

  • Identify requirements, including plans, patterns and designs from job specifications
  • Perform housekeeping tasks to prepare for work to be undertaken

2. Conduct pre-production checks

  • Perform pre-operational checks including checking for and acting on hazards
  • Set up tools, jigs, fixtures and equipment to support fabrication process
  • Undertake other pre-production checks including ensuring availability of safety equipment

3. Form materials to shape

  • Arrange materials in order they will be required according to work requirements
  • Form material into shape, using required fixing or joining methods, according to job specifications
  • Measure and check product against specifications, making adjustments to meet expected quality
  • Trim and finish joints and fabricated product according to job specifications
  • Accurately complete logs and records
  • Apply waste management strategies to collect and segregate scrap, trim and other materials according to workplace procedures
  • Clean equipment and work area according to equipment specifications and workplace procedures

4. Respond to process control variances

  • Recognise and log process control variances and their causes
  • Determine, prioritise and implement remedial and preventative actions based on identified issues and causes
  • Accurately maintain records and logbooks

Assessment Requirements

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:
Fabricate at least one product with rubber or plastics to meet job specifications

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:
principles of rubber and plastics product fabrication
methods of forming and joining
methods for trimming and finishing
types of forming tools and equipment and suitability for different materials including:
power and jig saws
thermal cutting devices
drills
riveting tools
bolts
stitching equipment
the criteria for overall process/equipment readiness for the process or equipment being used
types of materials commonly used in the sector and their behaviour when joined together
production workflow sequences and materials demand
key variables that may affect product quality and production output
typical process and product problems, including early warning signs, possible causes and corrective actions:
incorrect patterns
marking errors
wear and breakage
loss of power or drives
controller sequence timer issues
sequencing problems
organisational procedures relevant to the work environment or job role
hazards that may arise in the job or work environment, and:
their possible causes
potential consequences
appropriate risk controls.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies.
Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
