Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use finishing and assembly processes and equipment to prepare components and products for use by customers or in secondary manufacturing processing.
This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team.
The unit principally refers to finishing to cover a range of secondary value-adding processes such as trimming, grinding, applying protective coatings and inspecting the product for expected and unexpected imperfections. It also refers to cleaning, sorting, assembly and reworking of minor surface imperfections.
No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

What You'll Learn

1. Check work requirements and prepare for work

  • Identify requirements from job specifications and assemble equipment and other required items
  • Confirm work planning process by consulting workplace procedures and safety data sheets
  • Ensure safety equipment is available and in good operational condition according to equipment specifications
  • Remove products from equipment according to handling procedures
  • Identify end of production run and cease production according to job specifications and workplace procedures

2. Check quality of product

  • Inspect product to identify finishing requirements
  • Identify and report significant finning, flashing or other quality problems
  • Modify finishing process to amend output, and verify changes result in acceptable quality outputs
  • Identify and process nonconforming products according to quality management procedures

3. Perform finishing operation

  • Trim product according to job specifications
  • Undertake other finishing processes including application of protective coatings and secondary process operations according to job specifications
  • Apply waste management and recycling strategies according to workplace procedures
  • Inspect finished product for suitability for further processing, for customer delivery or for remediation, according to job specifications and workplace procedures
  • Assemble and sort finished products to meet delivery requirements
  • Prepare finished packages for transfer according to handling and packing procedures
  • Accurately record product data
  • Clean equipment and work area and perform other housekeeping tasks

4. Respond to product imperfections

  • Recognise product imperfections and their causes
  • Determine, prioritise and implement remedial actions based on identified issues and causes
  • Accurately maintain records and logbooks

Assessment Requirements

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:
finish components and products and components to meet job specifications at least once using relevant processes including one or more of:
trimming
grinding
applying protective coatings
cleaning
sorting and assembly.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:
typical product or component quality requirements, and quality management procedures
inspection methods for identifying finishing requirements
product defect classifications
product finishing methods including trimming, workflow sequences and materials
key variables that may affect product quality and production output, and procedures and actions to prevent and process variable outcomes
typical product quality issues and defects including flashing and finning, and their:
early warning signs
possible causes including mould or die closure and misalignment
corrective actions
organisational procedures relevant to the work environment or job role
hazards that may arise in the job or work environment, and:
their possible causes
potential consequences
appropriate risk controls.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies.
Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
