Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to finish products made from composite materials.
This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team.
The unit principally refers to a finishing process, such as automotive class ‘A’ finish, that is applied to an engineered product prior to sale.
No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.
What You'll Learn
1.
- 1.1 Identify requirements from job specifications
- 1.2 Identify and take action on hazards that will impact meeting work requirements
2.
- 2.1 Verify tools, equipment, jigs, fixtures and measuring devices meet requirements
- 2.3 Ensure safety equipment is available and in good operational condition according to equipment specifications
3.
- 3.1 Assemble and join components according to job requirements
- 3.3 Check product meets specifications and quality standards, modifying the finishing process to amend output where necessary to meet job specifications
- 3.4 Apply testing methods to ensure conformity to job specifications during production
- 3.5 Clean, adjust and lubricate equipment according to equipment specifications

Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:
• finish composite products at least once to meet job specifications.
Knowledge Evidence
There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:
• product quality requirements
• product defect classifications and signs of defects
• the criteria for overall process or equipment readiness for the process or equipment being used
• production workflow sequences and materials demand
• types and application of composites finishing processes
• typical tools and equipment used in finishing, including:
• power tools including drills, grinders, sanders, polishers and routers
• cutting tools
• methods of measuring surface finishes
• key variables that may affect product quality and production output
• typical process and product problems, as listed below, including early warning signs, possible causes and corrective actions:
• warped products or components
• surface defects
• equipment wear and breakage
• organisational procedures relevant to the work environment or job role
• hazards that may arise in the job or work environment, and:
• their possible causes
• potential consequences
• appropriate risk controls.
Assessment Conditions
Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies.
Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
Foundation Skills
- {'skill': 'Foundation Skills', 'description': 'This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance.\n• Numeracy skills to interpret information from measuring devices.\n• Reading skills to interpret job and equipment specifications and workplace procedures.\n• Writing and oral communication skills to record and report on product and production data relating to finishing composite products.\nOther foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.'}
