Application

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to apply liquid surface coatings to products by hand or immersion or using a spray gun.
This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team.
The unit principally refers to operators who are required to select and prepare materials and equipment, apply surface coatings, check conformity to specifications and recognise and respond to process control variances.
No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

What You'll Learn

1. Check work requirements

  • Identify requirements from job specifications
  • Perform housekeeping tasks to prepare for work to be undertaken
  • Perform pre-operational checks including checking for and acting on hazards

2. Start up surface coating equipment

  • Conduct pre-startup checks according to equipment specifications
  • Start up coating equipment according to equipment instructions

3. Apply surface coating

  • Check process is operating according to specifications and work requirements
  • Ensure output meets job specifications and quality standards
  • Monitor and maintain supply of materials to support process
  • Accurately complete logs and records as required
  • Apply waste management strategies to collect and segregate scrap, trim and other materials according to workplace procedures
  • Clean equipment and work area according to equipment specifications and workplace procedures
  • Pause or stop equipment in both normal and abnormal circumstances according to workplace procedures

4. Respond to process control variances

  • Recognise and log process control variances and their causes
  • Determine, prioritise and implement remedial and preventative actions based on identified issues and causes
  • Accurately maintain records and logbooks

Assessment Requirements

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:
apply liquid surface coatings at least once to meet job specifications.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:
common types of coatings, their differences and range of applications
methods of application of common coatings
the criteria for overall process/equipment readiness for the process or equipment being used
common types of equipment used in the application of liquid coatings, including:
coating equipment
brushes
spray guns
film coaters
immersion equipment
the function and principles of operation of spray gun equipment
processing behaviour of polymers and the role of additives
production workflow sequences and materials demand
key variables that may affect product quality and production output, including:
spray patterns
materials consistency
finished colour
surface finish
product integrity and general conformance to specifications
coating viscosity
solvent/thinner blend ratios
the potential effects of variations in raw materials, conditions and equipment in relation to quality of product
reasons for checking conditions and taking action when they are outside of normal range of process variability
typical process and product problems, including early warning signs, possible causes and corrective actions
organisational procedures relevant to the work environment or job role
hazards that may arise in the job or work environment, and:
their possible causes
potential consequences
appropriate risk controls.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies.
Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
