Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate hand-held air or power equipment used in the assembly and finishing of components in a production process.
This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team.
The unit principally refers to working safely with hand-held power tools as a learned discipline of skilled application.
No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

What You'll Learn

1.

  • 1.1 Identify equipment for drilling, cutting and grinding from job specifications
  • 1.3 Identify lubrication and/or water separation equipment from job specifications
  • 1.4 Identify other requirements from job specifications
  • 1.5 Perform housekeeping tasks to prepare for work to be undertaken
  • 1.6 Perform pre-operational checks including checking for and acting on hazards, including those arising from by-products, and equipment damage or faults

  • 2.1 Check condition of equipment against equipment specifications
  • 2.3 Set up equipment for required production process according to equipment specifications
  • 2.4 Test equipment through full operating range required for task to ensure readiness for use

  • 3.1 Start up and operate equipment according to manufacturer instructions
  • 3.3 Check process is operating according to equipment specifications and work requirements
  • 3.4 Ensure output meets job specifications and quality standards and is ready for next operation according to work requirements
  • 3.5 Monitor and maintain supply of materials to support operation of equipment
  • 3.6 Accurately complete logs and records
  • 3.7 Apply waste management strategies to deal with dust, swarf, off-cuts and other production by-products and waste according to workplace procedures
  • 3.8 Clean, inspect and store equipment and maintain storage areas according to specifications and workplace procedures
  • 3.9 Pause or shut down equipment in normal and abnormal circumstances according to workplace procedures

  • 4.1 Recognise and log process control and their causes
  • 4.3 Accurately maintain records and logbooks

Assessment Requirements

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:
• operate hand-held air or power equipment for production processes at least once to meet job specifications.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:
• types and application of common air and power equipment and tools, including:
• impact wrenches
• drills
• grinders
• cutters
• saws
• functions of the air or power equipment being used
• principles of operation of the equipment
• the criteria for overall process/equipment readiness for the process or equipment being used and maintenance requirements and procedures
• production workflow sequences that involve hand-held air or power tools, and materials demand
• the potential effects of variations in materials and equipment operation in relation to the quality of output
• key variables that may affect product quality and production output, including:
• tool speeds
• condition of tools
• useability
• cleanliness
• typical equipment and tool problems, including:
• tool malfunctions
• damaged leads or hoses
• incorrect tool selection
• worn or blunt tools and tool bits
• damaged or faulty tools
• organisational procedures relevant to the work environment and job role, including procedures for the emergency shutdown of equipment
• hazards that may arise in the job or work environment, especially those arising from power sources or compressed air, and:
• their possible causes
• potential consequences
• appropriate risk controls
• process by-products that may cause damage to the operator, environment, products, raw materials, or other equipment and personnel.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies.
Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
