Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use polymer fabrication techniques to fit and assemble components or customised products.
This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team.
This unit principally refers to those specialised polymer fabrication techniques that can be applied to the manufacture of orthotics, prosthetics, bionic and mechanical healthcare and industrial products.
No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:
• fit attachments and assemble components for customised polymer products at least once to meet requirements, using one or more of the following techniques:
• trimming and sewing
• grinding
• cleaning
• assembly for prototype testing
• application of fasteners or rivets.
Knowledge Evidence
There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:
• product or component quality requirements
• regulatory procedures for manufacture, and the governing bodies that administer them
• compatible materials for fasteners and rivets
• sewing machine applications, including:
• set-up and maintenance
• types of needles
• types of feet
• tension settings
• testing methods that demonstrate compliance.
Assessment Conditions
Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies.
Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
Foundation Skills
- {'skill': 'Foundation Skills', 'description': 'This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance.\n• Numeracy skills to interpret technical specifications and equipment readings.\n• Reading skills to interpret job and technical specifications.\n• Writing and oral communication skills to record and report on compliance and processes.\nOther foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.'}
