Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply statistical methods to analyse process capability data and identify variations due to assignable causes and to develop and implement improvements to improve process capability.
This unit applies to technical experts, team leaders or others who have the authority to identify and justify process capability improvements, make (or arrange for) changes to be made to procedures, equipment or process and monitor the improvement actions.
This unit applies to any organisation that has applied six sigma or three sigma processes to determine process capability.
No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.
What You'll Learn
1.
- 1.1 Identify process for study
- 1.2 Obtain or organise process to obtain required data and information
2.
- 2.1 Read and interpret data and determine assignable causes
- 2.2 Develop possible improvements to eliminate assignable causes
- 2.3 Develop process improvement proposals
3.
- 3.1 Obtain required authorisations to implement improvements
- 3.3 Obtain or organise required data for improved process
- 3.4 Recalculate process capability
- 3.5 Implement revised data collection and processing and new capability information
- 3.6 Monitor improvements to determine any further action to achieve desired outcome/s
Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:
• interpret process capability data to identify assignable causes of variation and identify at least one process capability improvement
• liaise with stakeholders to gain authorisations and support the implementation of the improvement
• plan, implement and review the improvement.
Knowledge Evidence
There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:
• data collection and manipulation techniques
• variability, normal distribution and three and six sigma limits
• type of variations:
• random variation (no assignable cause)
• non-random variation (which has an assignable cause).
• methods of identifying causes of non-random variation in the process
• approaches to reducing variability
• process capability improvement proposals and authorisations.
Assessment Conditions
Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:
• use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources
• modelling of industry operating conditions, including:
• process capability determined via use of six sigma or three sigma processes.
Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
Foundation Skills
- {'skill': 'Foundation Skills', 'description': 'This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.\n• Reading skills to interpret data and workplace documentation\n• Oral communication skills to liaise with stakeholders to obtain data and to ensure implementation of improvements\n• Numeracy skills to use statistical methods to interpret data and information in relation to process capability improvements.\nOther foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit.'}
