Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and visually document an internal value stream.
Within this unit an ‘internal value stream' refers to one or several processes where a nominal boundary can be identified for the purpose of the mapping. However it does not cover the breadth or complexity of the value stream across the whole organisation and/or the supply chain.
This unit applies to team leaders or others who have been given the authority to lead, facilitate and assist others in their normal work and who are required to facilitate the mapping of an internal value stream to determine improvements in meeting customer requirements and in reducing muda (waste).
This unit applies to any organisation that is implementing competitive systems and practices.
No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

- 1.7 Identify sources of information to populate and validate map
- 1.8 Ensure stakeholders understand process and purpose of value stream mapping
2.
- 2.1 Liaise with stakeholders to capture activities for each step in value stream
- 2.3 Develop visual representation, in hard copy or using software, of value stream current state
3.
- 3.1 Liaise with stakeholders to identify value added for customer at each step in value stream
- 3.3 Liaise with stakeholders to identify where value stream improvements can be made

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:
• facilitate mapping of at least one internal value stream, with 2 or more other people, which identifies at least 2 improvements
• plan the implementation of at least 2 improvements.
Knowledge Evidence
There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:
• value stream mapping techniques and symbols
• facilitation of brainstorming events and team communication
• methods of identifying customer value added and/or customer perceived value
• types of muda that can be identified through value stream mapping
• methods of gathering data against performance variables
• value stream analysis techniques
• methods of prioritising improvements
• identifying implementation needs
• organisation’s approval processes.
Assessment Conditions
Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:
• use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources
• modelling of industry operating conditions, including:
• functioning competitive systems and practices environment.
Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
Foundation Skills
