Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to contribute to the design of commercial refrigeration systems or to undertake the complete design for less complex systems. It includes applying refrigeration and food storage technology, using standard manufactured components and piping, following design specifications, documenting system design and complying with safety and regulatory requirements.
The unit applies to technicians in organisations that design commercial refrigeration equipment and applies to team situations where the technician can be working with engineers and other technicians from heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) and other disciplines on large design projects as well as individual design work that is within the scope of the technician’s skill and knowledge.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
What You'll Learn
1.
- 1.1 Obtain and implement work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements for the work area
- 1.3 Plan design development work to meet scheduled timelines in consultation with others involved on the worksite
2.
- 2.1 Design system taking into account safety, regulatory requirements, relevant standards, system specifications and budgetary constraints
- 2.3 Check system design draft for compliance with the design brief, regulatory requirements and environmental standards
- 2.4 Document, validate and approve system design in accordance with organisational procedures
- 2.5 Consult as appropriate on any design adjustments required to meet contingencies and unexpected situations
3.
- 3.1 Establish operating criteria for expected ambient conditions
- 3.3 Adjust the functional design and remap operating characteristics to achieve optimal system performance
- 3.4 Program the control system to meet operational requirements
- 3.5 Document the designed system and its validation in accordance with organisational procedures
Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:
• identifying and interpreting drawings, specifications, manufacturer data, tables, relevant standards and regulatory requirements appropriate to the design task
• implementing work health and safety (WHS) procedures and practices including the use of risk control measures
• designing a commercial refrigeration system including using relevant software tools
• designing a commercial refrigeration system with one application related to food storage on at least two occasions
• communicating technical and procedural requirements to others
• dealing with unexpected situations
• documenting technical information and designs in accordance with procedures.
Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once .
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
• WHS requirements
• organisational procedures
• appropriate personnel to consult
• standards and codes relevant to commercial refrigeration systems
• calculation of capacity in heat exchangers
• commercial refrigeration system features and components including:
• applications
• system requirements
• operating conditions and criteria
• refrigerants
• refrigeration cycle
• evaporators
• condensers
• compressors
• liquid expansion devices
• system load balance point
• line sizing
• automatic controls
• commercial refrigeration and integration with an energy management system (EMS)
• EMS control components and the function and operating parameters
• EMS system design, applications, operation and maintenance
• environmental considerations.
Assessment Conditions
• Assessors must:
• have vocational competency in contributing to the design of a commercial refrigeration systems at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
• satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
• Where possible assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions that cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
• Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
• Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
