Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to check the balance and balancing of equipment.
Balancing may include the addition or removal of material and all specifications for machine operation and degree of balance to be supplied.
Where wheel and tyre balancing is required unit MEM27029 Maintain wheels and tyres should be selected.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:
following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
identifying and interpreting specifications, charts, lists and drawings to balance equipment
setting up component to be balanced to site/manufacturer’s procedures and determining balance/out-of-balance and comparing to specifications
operating balance equipment using appropriate techniques safely
checking for compliance to specifications
undertaking numerical operations, geometry, calculations and formulae for balancing equipment.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
principles of balancing and reasons for testing equipment for balance
effect of out of balance components on machine/equipment operation and life
procedures for checking the balance of equipment
most appropriate procedure to be applied to selected balancing situations and reasons for selection
procedures for:
setting up the component to be balanced
operating the balancing equipment
recording out-of-balance readings
balancing out-of-balance equipment
specifications of the component to be balanced
principles and methods of rigid and flexible rotation balancing
techniques of single and multiple plane balancing
appropriate balancing technique for given balancing situations and reasons for selection
precautions to be taken when adding or removing material to achieve balance.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must:
have vocational competency in balancing equipment at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
Assessment must include evidence of 80 hours of workplace practice associated with the skills of this unit in a functioning workplace.
All aspects of competent application of the unit must be addressed including prerequisite competency units and associated workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
Knowledge assessment may be either verbal or written but must adequately reflect the knowledge requirements of the unit and its prerequisites in a functioning workplace.
Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
