Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to undertake commissioning work on internally or externally located plant and/or equipment that is new, or replaced, or has been extensively modified (by people usually outside of the commissioning individual or team).
Where reports are required to be completed see unit MEM16010 Write reports.
Where additional specialist applications are required in undertaking commissioning procedures e.g. fluid power, instrumentation and programmable logic controller (PLC), see appropriate units.
This unit is not intended to be used by maintenance personnel completing their own work, including return to service work, as these activities are covered in the following units:
MEM09011 Apply basic engineering design concepts
MEM18004 Maintain and overhaul mechanical equipment
MEM18006 Perform precision fitting of engineering components
MEM18054 Fault find, test and calibrate instrumentation systems and equipment
Some jurisdictions may require the holder of this unit using the refrigeration and air conditioning pathways to be licensed or certified and users should check with the relevant authorities.

5. Make reports
- 5.1 Ensure report/logs are produced on completed system/plant/machinery/status/performance in accordance with procedures, as required
Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:
following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
identifying and interpreting specifications and drawings for undertaking commissioning procedures for plant and equipment that are new, or replaced or extensively modified
planning the commissioning procedure in consultation with appropriate personnel and ensuring approvals are obtained in accordance with procedures
assessing system performance by taking necessary measurements and readings using appropriate test equipment in a safe and effective manner and recording all variances from specifications
adjusting plant/system performance to specifications and resolving technical difficulties with appropriate personnel
providing reports in accordance with SOPs, as required.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
sequence of events in the commissioning of the machine/plant
performance tests appropriate to the machine/plant to be commissioned
measurements required to ensure conformance to specifications and correct points at which measurements are to be taken
appropriate adjustments to bring the machine/plant into line with operational specifications based on engineering principles or appropriate technical advice
reporting requirements relevant to the machine/plant being commissioned.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must:
have vocational competency in undertaking commissioning procedures for plant and or equipment at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience.
satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
Assessment must include evidence of 160 hours of workplace practice associated with the skills of this unit in a functioning workplace.
All aspects of competent application of the unit must be addressed including prerequisite competency units and associated workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
Knowledge assessment may be either verbal or written but must adequately reflect the knowledge requirements of the unit and its prerequisites in a functioning workplace.
Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
Foundation Skills
- text: This section describes those required skills (reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy) that are essential to workplace performance in this unit of competency. Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
