Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to determine lift and load requirements, work within areas of restricted movement or conditions of restricted visibility, identify loads that need special care, and operate forklifts in special traffic conditions.
This unit applies to advanced forklift and load shifting skills above those required for general operation and is intended to cover load shifting applications where special-purpose equipment/accessories requiring advanced operational skills are required.
Depending on the equipment being used a high risk work licence may be required and users should check with the relevant authorities.
What You'll Learn
1. Determine job requirements
- 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
- 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
- 1.4 Identify load and check against safe working load and/or relevant specifications or regulations and final position/location
- 1.5 Identify special handling requirements of load, if applicable
- 1.6 Lift and place load in the correct final position/location to achieve specified balance of load
2. Identify and carry loads that require special care
- 2.1 Identify loads requiring special care
- 2.2 Carry loads in accordance with special requirements of product according to procedures and/or regulations
3. Operate forklifts in areas of restricted movement and in special traffic conditions
- 3.1 Collect and manoeuvre load without damage to load or collision with obstacles according to SOPs
- 3.2 Operate forklifts in areas of heavy traffic
- 3.3 Operate forklifts over difficult or uneven surfaces
- 3.4 Operate forklifts in areas shared with the general public, as required
Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:
following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
identifying and interpreting specifications, regulations, load charts and communicating with personnel on movement/location when performing advanced operation of load shifting equipment
selecting appropriate load shifting device to suit shifting requirements
identifying safe working loads as defined in the manufacturers’ specifications for lifting plant or gear
identifying/managing loads requiring special care and taking appropriate action
operating forklifts in a complex mobile plant environment.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
pre-operational checks
licensing requirements and appropriate permits
load protection
operational environment
methods and techniques for loads requiring special care.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must:
have vocational competency in performing advanced operation of load shifting equipment at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires
Where possible assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions. This must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills
Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
Foundation Skills
- text: This section describes those required skills (reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy) that are essential to workplace performance in this unit of competency. Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
