Application
This unit of competency was developed for post trade engineering fabrication training and the recognition of skills associated with the establishment and maintenance of a formal weld record management system for an enterprise.
It defines general record keeping skill and knowledge requirements as well as specific welding related skill and knowledge required for the establishment of an enterprise level weld record management system as defined by the unit in conjunction with its prerequisites.
The unit is intended to apply in occupations such as welding supervisor, welding engineer and in other relevant occupations responsible for establishing and maintaining welding record management systems for an enterprise.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
What You'll Learn
1. Determine weld record management system requirements
- 1.1 Establish capability requirements of weld record management system in conjunction with relevant stakeholders
- 1.2 Determine general record keeping requirements including traceability, system access, security and privacy requirements
- 1.3 Determine scope of welding records and parameters required to be recorded in weld record management system
- 1.4 Investigate available weld record management system formats and recommend an appropriate format for approval
2. Establish weld record management system
- 2.1 Establish a codes and standards library
- 2.2 Establish an identification system for items and individual entries
- 2.3 Establish procedures for record data entry, approval or verification before entry
- 2.4 Establish access and security procedures for storing, retrieving, amending, backing up and deleting records
3. Maintain weld record management system
- 3.1 Monitor welding and fabrication operations to identify any changes required to scope of the welding records management system
- 3.2 Establish protocols to ensure currency of standards and codes in standards library
Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include the ability to:
review welding operations to identify scope of the weld records management system
establish rules for unique identifiers to be used in the weld record system
establish procedures for record data entry, approval or verification before entry
establish privacy, backup and security procedures for a weld record management system
make recommendations on the scope and format of a weld record management system for a fabrication enterprise
establish a library of standards and codes for an enterprise
monitor and adjust the weld records management system against fabrication and welding operations in an enterprise.
Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
welding parameters and processes
technical drawings and welding symbols
methods manufacturers use to indicate the specification of materials including base metals, filler metals, gases, fluxes and other welding related consumables
Australian and international welding related standards and codes and methods to determine their currency
the relationship between designs in metal fabrication operations including:
drawings and customer specifications
codes and standards
procedure qualification records, and
welding procedure specifications
privacy procedures and regulations
formats for enterprise welding records systems.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must:
have vocational competency in establishing and maintaining a weld record management system at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
Assessment must occur in a functioning workplace. Where assessment in the workplace would be unsafe, impractical or threatens the environment, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects the circumstances that would be experienced in a functioning workplace. Assessment must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
Knowledge assessment may be either verbal or written but must adequately reflect the knowledge requirements of the unit in a functioning workplace.
Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
Foundation Skills
- text: This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance. Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
