Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to assemble and install equipment and ancillaries/accessories.
Work is undertaken using new external and internal locations and sites and foundations, footings, beds and framework are completed prior to installation practices.
It does not cover installation requiring substantial modification to the existing site or where components are replaced by the same or similar type.
Where production-related assembly work is undertaken unit MEM03002 Perform precision assembly should also be selected.
Where installation requires substantial modification to the existing site, and is being replaced by the same or similar type unit MEM10006 Install machine/plant should also be selected.
Where load shifting equipment is required to be used unit MEM11010 Operate mobile load shifting equipment should also be selected.
Where positions are determined, alignments are undertaken and testing within manufacturer specifications is required unit MEM25012 Install and test operations of marine auxiliary systems should also be selected.
This unit should not be selected if unit MEM03002 Perform precision assembly has already been selected.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:
following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
identifying and interpreting specifications, plans, drawings, charts, lists and other applicable reference documents to assemble and install equipment and accessories/ancillaries
checking site and taking dimensions and measurements and performing alterations and corrections with approval of appropriate authority
preparing surfaces, materials and components for use and checking components against specifications for compliance
preparing machine/equipment components for correct sequential installation
undertaking numerical operations and calculations associated with assembling and installing equipment and accessories/ancillaries
installing machine/plant or equipment and performing modifications/alterations as required in accordance with manufacturer and site specifications
levelling, aligning, connecting and coupling machine/equipment to specifications and packing/sealing through-hull fittings, as required.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
appropriate levelling and measuring equipment and benefits of choice
procedural standards, legislative requirements and non-compliance, and the impact of such
preparatory requirements and processes
sequence of installation of parts and installation procedures
reasons for modifications/alterations and impact of modifications/alterations
procedures for levelling and aligning and impacts of misalignment
cleaning procedures.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must:
have vocational competency in assembling and installing equipment and accessories/ancillaries at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires
Where possible assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions. This must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills
Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
Foundation Skills
- text: This section describes those required skills (reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy) that are essential to workplace performance in this unit of competency. Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
