Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to construct and assemble marine timber components, including laminating by cold processes, and applies to marine vessel backbone components.
Where hull is to be planked, planking can include carvel, strip, clinker and double diagonal systems.
Where permanent timber bending practices are required including boiling/steam bending then see unit MEM25009 Form timber shapes using hot processes.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:
following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
identifying and interpreting drawings, procedures, templates, construction details, assembly practices and material types to construct and assemble marine vessel timber components
cutting/sizing and preparing and forming/shaping timber against template/measurement specifications and modifying as required and checking final form/shape against job specifications for compliance
assembling supporting jigs to suit job requirements
selecting and using fastening methods and determining fastening sequence
finishing and applying preservation materials, cleaning excess material wastage and undertaking disposal of waste in accordance with SOPs.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
component types/materials/templates and their uses
characteristics, properties, specifications and uses of species, including durability, strength and appearance
types, specification and uses of fasteners
applicable codes and regulations
methods used to take off measurements, mark out, construct and assemble components
effect on access, rigidity, strength, buoyancy and resistance to stresses encountered at sea
hand tools, power tools and workshop machinery to suit construction applications
practices for cutting/dressing/sizing/shaping material
measuring and marking out techniques using graduated devices, battens and templates
procedures used in checking final form/shape
clamping and shoring methods and the use of jigs
procedures, codes and regulations used in applying relevant fastenings to suit assembly
methods of cleaning, preserving and finishing components, their uses and safety precautions
waste disposal obligations and regulations.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must:
have vocational competency in constructing and assembling marine vessel timber components at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
Assessment must occur in a functioning workplace. Where assessment in the workplace would be unsafe, impractical or threatens the environment, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects the circumstances that would be experienced in a functioning workplace. Assessment must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
Foundation Skills
- text: This section describes those required skills (reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy) that are essential to workplace performance in this unit of competency. Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
