Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to set up marine vessel structures using straightforward levelling and alignment procedures.
Structures requiring a location/erection process using framework would typically be those where fairness and load bearing is critical and/or where building/marine regulations can apply. Specifications for the structure would be supplied via engineering drawings or similar and include site location information.
This unit does not include fixed structures, including jetties, wharves and moorings.
Where construction and assembly of entirely marine timber components is undertaken unit MEM25005 Construct and assemble marine vessel timber components should also be selected.
Where lifting or rigging skills are required appropriate materials handling units should also be selected.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:
following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
identifying and confirming relative structural components and materials species/types against job specifications
checking the construction site location for dimensions and levelling and carrying out minor alterations, corrections and adjustments to ensure site is ready in consultation with the appropriate authority, including supervisor, customer and surveying agency
undertaking levelling and alignment procedures using appropriate tools, equipment and methods and making adjustments where required to establish alignment requirements and erecting levelled structures in accordance with specifications and procedures.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
practices used for checking construction site location, dimensions and levelling procedures
procedures for effecting authorised minor alterations, correction or adjustment
practices used to prepare surfaces, materials/component structures
structural components and material species/types
process for obtaining levelling and measurement reading
levelling and measurement equipment/tools and methods used to level equipment/component assembly structure
engineering principles, techniques, set-up procedures and tools for levelling and measurement
sequence of assembly of component structure
erecting and fixing methods.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must:
have vocational competency in setting up marine vessel structures at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
Assessment must occur in a functioning workplace. Where assessment in the workplace would be unsafe, impractical or threatens the environment, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects the circumstances that would be experienced in a functioning workplace. Assessment must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
Foundation Skills
- text: This section describes those required skills (reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy) that are essential to workplace performance in this unit of competency. Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
