Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to cut and polish a gemstone assembly from pre-formed materials using gemstone and trade accepted backing mediums. It is based on deleted unitCUVOPA206ACut and polish opal doublets and triplets.
This unit applies to individuals processing gemstones in a small or large-scale production context. They use and adapt technical knowledge and skills to produce work that meets pre-determined jewellers’ requirements.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:
• following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and complying with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
• identifying, selecting and using consumables, tools, machinery and equipment appropriate to cutting and polishing tasks
• cutting, polishing and cleaning doublets or triplets on at least two different gemstone types to accepted standards
• cutting and polishing commercial and non-commercial triplet tops on at least two occasions to accepted standards.
Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
• materials, equipment, tools, machinery and consumables needed for cutting and polishing doublets and triplets
• characteristics of gemstone that make it suitable for use as an assembly
• requirements to determine jewellers' cutting angles and why this is necessary
• techniques and processes to cut and polish gemstone assemblies
• differences and similarities in cutting and polishing gemstone assembly commercial and non-commercial tops
• safety issues associated with the use of gemstone cutting and polishing:
• materials
• machinery
• equipment
• tools
• consumables.
Assessment Conditions
• Assessors must:
• have vocational competency in cutting and polishing gemstone assemblies at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
• satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
• Where possible, assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions that cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
• Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
• Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
