Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to design and create platinum jewellery objects applying appropriate jewellery techniques and includes assessing the application of the design brief in the final outcome.
This unit applies to individuals designing jewellery in a small or large-scale production context. They use and adapt both creative and technical skills and knowledge to produce work.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:
• following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
• determining customer requirements
• researching information on fabricating platinum jewellery items
• generating ideas and concepts and sketching and interpreting drawings
• preparing production plan for selected design solution and confirming with client
• determining, selecting and applying appropriate jewellery production techniques on at least two occasions
• preparing and maintaining jewellery tools and equipment, including hammers, stakes, files and vices
• applying appropriate surface finishing techniques on at least two occasions
• producing tests and experiments for function against design brief,
• determining the requirements for repair or restoration, as applicable
• evaluating and documenting design processes in accordance with procedures.
Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
• safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• appropriate personnel to consult throughout the fabrication process
• concept development techniques
• methods used to determine customer requirements
• purpose, function and maintenance of jewellery equipment
• characteristics and chemical properties of platinum
• emery requirements for platinum
• pre-polish and finishing options suitable for platinum items
• acids used in platinum work
• chemical and visual differences of platinum with other commonly used metals
• contamination risks for platinum
• heating and cooling techniques for platinum
• techniques and manufacturing methods and tools for platinum production
• fusing and soldering techniques for platinum jewellery
• surface finishing aspects specific to platinum jewellery production
• binding and locating techniques
• environmental considerations when producing platinum jewellery.
Assessment Conditions
• Assessors must:
• have vocational competency in fabricating platinum jewellery items at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
• satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
• Where possible, assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions. This must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
• Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
• Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
