Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to apply technical and design skills to trial experimental designs and techniques. It targets the creative process to inform development of design concepts for custom production or exhibition.
This unit applies to individuals involved in jewellery design or manufacture in a small or large-scale production context. They use and adapt creative and technical skills and knowledge to create design solutions.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:
• following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
• conducting research into jewellery or object design to determine trends and sustainability considerations
• confirming objectives for design process
• determining parameters and market conditions for the design process
• applying skill and knowledge in materials and construction processes on at least two occasions to experiment with and develop design concepts, including selecting and using design tools and techniques for jewellery or object designs
• testing and assessing the viability of design concepts on at least two occasions
• using and producing design documentation and production plan.
Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
• safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• purpose, objectives and parameters for the design process
• market conditions that influence the design process
• research methodology suitable to determine trends, future directions and sustainability considerations in jewellery or object design
• range and uses of jewellery and object production techniques
• calculations and measurements
• reasons for selecting particular materials, construction methods, manufacturing and finishing techniques
• creative design tools and processes
• elements and principles of design
• planning and process stages
• working properties of precious and non-precious metals and other materials
• fine detail manufacturing processes
• various components of jewellery or object items
• design tests
• measuring devices, documentation and recording methods.
Assessment Conditions
• Assessors must:
• have vocational competency in experimenting with jewellery or object designs at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
• satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
• Where possible, assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions. This must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
• Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
• Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
