Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to perform advanced press operations and relates to operations where the output of the machine/process can be varied at the discretion of the operator and where recognition/rectification skills are applied based upon product/material/process knowledge to achieve specified outcomes.
Where operational maintenance is required to be performed unitMEM07001Perform operational maintenance of machines/equipment should also be selected.
When production packaging and labelling of the finished goods or product is required unitMEM11006Perform production packaging should also be selected.
Where the selection and use of power tools/hand held operations is required unitMEM18002Use power tools/hand held operations should also be selected.

Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:
• following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
• identifying and interpreting specifications, charts, lists and other workplace documents in performing advanced press operations
• undertaking pre-start checks of a machine or process, including checking of safety equipment and guards
• undertaking appropriate manual handling in loading, unloading and storing of finished work without damage
• operating press machine or process and determining required adjustments to process
• recording production data in accordance with SOPs
• identifying and rectifying faults/deviations in product, raw materials, tooling and machine/process.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
• safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• characteristics and properties of materials used in pressing operations and consequences of selecting incorrect processes for nominated materials
• documentation, production recording and reporting requirements for press operations
• pre-start checks and press machine/process start-up and unloading procedures
• types of product, process, tooling and machine faults/deviations and corrective actions
• procedures to be followed in emergency situations
• consequences of improper handling and storing of finished work
• component/feed stock levels to ensure continuous process
• programmed operational maintenance requirements.
Assessment Conditions
• Assessors must:
• have vocational competency in performing advanced press operations at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
• satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires
• Where possible assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions. This must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills
• Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications
• Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
