Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to forge complex shapes using a forging press where specialised methods of holding, positioning and lifting complex forgings are required.
Where basic use of a power hammer is required, MEM06002 Perform hammer forging should also be selected.
Where the interpretation of technical drawings is required, MEM09002 Interpret technical drawing should also be selected.
Where the selection and use of engineering measurement is required, MEM12023 Perform engineering measurements should also be selected.
Where the selection and use of tools is required, MEM18001 Use hand tools and MEM18002 Use power tools/hand-held operations should also be selected as appropriate.
Commonwealth and state/territory laws and regulations governing work and training environments must be complied with.

Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include the ability to:
follow work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOP) and safe work practices
select and use measuring guides
set up and safely operate press equipment
select and use complex tooling following procedures
use appropriate and safe methods for holding, positioning and lifting complex-shaped forged material, including hot materials
perform press forging to forge shapes to meet job requirements
select and operate heating equipment to preheat and apply heat treatment to complex forgings.
Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
safe work practices and safe operating procedures (SOP) and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
press forming tools and their application to produce a range of pressed forgings
press forging and punching techniques
calculations and formulas for determining the volume and weight of material
effects of material shrinkage and oxidisation on the dimensions of the forged article
methods of overcoming/allowing for the effects of shrinkage and oxidisation when press forging articles
procedures for safe handling of material
preheating and post-forging heat treatment processes.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must:
have vocational competency in performing press forging of complex shapes at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
Where possible assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions. This must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
Foundation Skills
- text: This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance. Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
