Application
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to select, set up and operate drop and upset forging equipment to forge material to meet size, shape and finish specifications.
Where routine, repetitive cold upset forging is required,MEM07024Operate and monitor machine and process should be selected.
Where the interpretation of technical drawings is required,MEM09002Interpret technical drawing should also be selected.
Where the selection and use of engineering measurement is required,MEM12023Perform engineering measurements should also be selected.
Where the selection and use of tools is required,MEM18001Use hand tools andMEM18002Use power tools/hand held operations should also be selected as appropriate.
Commonwealth and state/territory laws and regulations governing work and training environments must be complied with.

Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include the ability to:
• follow work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
• set up and use a range of drop forging and upset (and cold upset) forging equipment
• prepare and forge materials using drop and upset methods, including using lubricants for forged material release
• perform material finishing and correction of forging galls, folds and cracks as necessary.
Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.
Knowledge Evidence
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
• safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• drop and upset forging techniques
• characteristics of drop hammers and upsetting machines
• reasons for and rectification of incorrect alignment of dies and punches
• preparation of dies (pre-heating, lubrication, assessment of defects and conformance to determine replacement requirements)
• techniques for materials pre-heating
• tools, techniques and equipment for drop and upset forging
• techniques for setting, adjusting and operating drop hammers and upsetting machines
• characteristics of galls, folds, and cracks in drop and upset forged products and how to rectify these defects
• removal of flash and fins from drop/upset forged articles
• calculations for material volume, weight and allowances, including allowances for scale, flash and fin
• thermal expansion and contraction and its impact on die design.
Assessment Conditions
• Assessors must:
• have vocational competency in performing drop and upset forging at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
• satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
• Where possible assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions. This must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
• Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
• Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
