Assessment Requirements
Performance Evidence
To demonstrate competency, a candidate must meet the performance criteria for this unit by:
• installing three different backflow prevention devices one being low hazard rating, one being a medium hazard rating, and one being a high hazard rating from the list below, including pipework to inlet of the backflow device and ancillary equipment.
• Low hazard device defined as:
• dual-check valve with atmospheric port
• dual-check valve
• dual-check valve with intermediate vent
• atmospheric vacuum breaker
• single check valve (testable)
• single check detector assembly (testable).
• Medium hazard testable device defined as:
• double-check valve assembly
• double-check detector assembly
• pressure type vacuum breaker.
• High hazard testable device defined as:
• registered break tank
• registered air gap
• reduced pressure zone device
• reduced pressure detector assembly.
Knowledge Evidence
To be competent in this unit, a person must demonstrate knowledge of:
• pressure and flow rates
• types of backflow prevention devices such as:
• testable
• non-testable
• backflow hazard ratings
• suitability of backflow prevention devices
• types of irrigation systems
• how to access relevant information, including codes and standards
• tools, materials and equipment used to install backflow prevention devices
• work health and safety (WHS) requirements to install backflow prevention devices.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must meet the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.
This unit must be assessed in the workplace or a close simulation using realistic workplace conditions, materials, activities, responsibilities, procedures, safety requirements and environmental considerations.
